Hail, romaine. Blessed are tomato,
basil, bean and pepper, garlic, chive and sage.
To spring from tiny seed to
ripe, full summer harvest
and along the way inform
and feed, infuriate and please;
to gather a community of hummingbird and bee,
beetle, mantis, spider, me.
These bells to Karen,
those leaves to Jean,
the cloves to Rob that
others may experience the grace.
We have always scattered
plants among our dead to scent decay,
to reverence the miracle of reoccurring life, to hope.
Hail, oregano. Ave atque vale, thyme.
Provide for us now and at the hour of our death.
